Lake Mývatn is a paradise for birdwatchers. This area is simply packed with birds, including many Barrow’s Goldeneyes and Harlequin Ducks. Other ducks include Common Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Tufted Duck, Greater Scaup and Eurasian Wigeon. There's also the possibility of vagrants, including American Wigeon, Surf Scoter and Ring-necked Duck.
Great Northern Diver and Horned Grebe are also commonly found, and the cliffs support Thick-billed and Common Murres (Brunnich’s and Common Guillemots), Razorbill, Atlantic Puffin and Northern Gannet. Arctic Tern is common, and gulls can include Iceland Gull, especially in spring.
Passerines are not abundant, but include Northern Raven, Common Redpoll, Snow Bunting and Redwing, and waders are well represented with Black-tailed Godwit, Eurasian Whimbrel, Dunlin and good numbers of Red-necked Phalaropes.
While in the far north, we include a cruise to look for Humpback Whales, which are always a great sight.
