This trip is based in the Kiskunsag National Park, a mixture of habitats with sand dunes, forest steppes (mainly oak and juniper) and sand steppes or sand ‘puszta’ as well as alkaline, salt lakes.
This range of habitats is home to many eastern European species, including European Roller, European Bee-eater, Red-footed Falcon, Eurasian Scops-owl, Syrian Woodpecker, Eurasian Wryneck, Eurasian Golden Oriole, European Turtle Dove and many more.
On short drives, we can look for some of the more sought-after species, including: Great Bustard, Eurasian Thick-knee, Short-toed Snake-eagle, Eastern Imperial Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Saker Falcon, Middle Spotted and Black Woodpeckers, and Black Stork is possible.
Depending on the season, alkaline lakes attract a wide variety of birds, including: Kentish Plover, Pygmy Cormorant, Ferruginous Duck, Squacco and Purple Herons, Spotted and Little Crakes, Montagu's Harrier, Eurasian Penduline-tit, Great Reed, Savi's and Moustached Warblers, Corncrake, Whiskered Tern and during wet-years Black and White-winged Black Terns, Red-crested Pochard and Mediterranean Gull.
