Lake Kerkini and its surrindings offer a wide range of habitats, providing excellent opportunities for many south-eastern european species. Whether in winter with many raptors and Pelicans, or in the spring or summer, with hordes of breeding herons and cormorants, there's always something to see.
Waterbirds are one of the attractions, and Dalmatian Pelicans breed here, as well as using the lake for feeding in the winter. They are joined by a few Great White Pelicans, Pygmy Cormorant, Eurasian Spoonbill, Black-crowned Night and Squacco Herons and in winter, Greater Flamingo. Ferruginous Duck is regular.
In the winter, there are goose flocks, which include Greater and Lesser White-fronted Geese, and quartering the area are Greater Spotted, White-tailed and Golden Eagles.
During the spring and summer, Black Kites abound and Short-toed Snake Eagle is regular. The fields hold Black-headed Bunting, Isabelline Wheatear, Calandra and Crested Larks, as well as Tawny Pipit. Red-rumped Swallows can be seen, and Great Reed Warblers sing from any reedbeds. Common Nightingales are very common in the scrub, and woodpeckers include Black, Grey-headed, Syrian and Middle Spotted.
Eurasian Hoopoe and European Bee-eaters are common in spring, and other species which can be sought include Cirl and Rock Buntings, Western Rock Nuthatch and Sombre Tit.
